Ha Giang – Top 4 Must-See Sites
Table of contents
Nestled in the far north of Vietnam, Ha Giang province seduces travelers seeking authenticity. Wild, mountainous and unspoiled, this region offers spectacular karst landscapes, colorful ethnic villages and vibrant culture still little influenced by mass tourism.
Unlike Sa Pa, Ha Giang retains a raw charm: winding roads, traditional markets and sincere smiles. A destination apart, where each turn reveals a postcard scene.
Here are the 4 must-see sites of Ha Giang not to be missed to fully experience the magic of Northern Vietnam.
1. Dong Van – Historic and Cultural Heart of Ha Giang
The Dong Van Plateau, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as the Dong Van Karst Geopark, is one of Vietnam’s natural treasures.
Its old quarter, founded over 100 years ago, is an architectural gem surrounded by limestone mountains. Traditional stone houses and paved alleys emanate a timeless atmosphere.
Must see:
-
The Sunday ethnic market, where Hmong, Tay, Nung and Hoa minorities gather in their colorful attire to exchange products, fabrics and local specialties.
-
Lung Cu flag tower, just a few kilometers away, marks the northernmost point of Vietnam. It offers breathtaking panoramic views of the hills and Chinese border.
-
The old quarter of Dong Van during full moon days (14th to 16th of the lunar month): red lanterns, music, dances and traditional dishes animate the streets in a magical atmosphere.

Horizon Vietnam Travel tip: Wake up early to enjoy the authentic atmosphere of the market before visitors arrive. This is where the true heart of traditional Ha Giang beats.
2. Hoang Su Phi – The Most Beautiful Terraced Rice Fields in the North
Think the most beautiful rice fields are in Sa Pa? Think again.
The terraced rice fields of Hoang Su Phi are among the most impressive in Vietnam. Carved into the mountainsides, they form golden waves as far as the eye can see, particularly stunning between September and October, during harvest.
Here, mass tourism is still rare. You can trek in complete tranquility between the hills, camp near the rice fields or share a meal with a local family.
The La Chi, Dao and Nung ethnic groups still live according to ancestral traditions, offering a fascinating glimpse into Vietnamese rural life.

Practical tip: For unforgettable photos, come at dawn or sunset – the golden light enhances the terraces and clouds cling to the peaks.
3. Quan Ba – Gate to Heaven and Twin Mountains
Located about 50 km from Ha Giang city, Quan Ba marks the entrance to the Dong Van Plateau Geological Park.
This is where the famous “Gate to Heaven” is located, built during the French colonial era in 1939. Although only a sign remains today, the panorama of the surrounding mountains justifies the detour by itself.
But the true wonder of Quan Ba is its twin mountains (Fairy Bosom Hills).
According to legend, a fairy fell in love with a young Hmong man. From their union a child was born, but the King of Heaven forced the fairy to return to the celestial realm. Before leaving, she left her breasts on Earth to nourish her son. These two hills, symbol of love and fertility, have since nourished the surrounding lands.

Traveler’s trick: Stop at Quan Ba to admire the view before continuing on to Dong Van. The contrast between the rice fields and the round mountains is unique in the world.
4. Ma Pi Leng Pass – The Most Beautiful Pass in Vietnam
Nicknamed “the king of passes,” Ma Pi Leng is undoubtedly the most spectacular in the country.
About 20 km long and culminating at 2,000 meters altitude, it connects Dong Van to Meo Vac. The road winds between limestone cliffs and overlooks the Nho Que river, whose turquoise color contrasts with the gray mountains and terraced fields.
Every turn offers a dizzying viewpoint. Travelers experience a feeling of absolute freedom, facing the raw grandeur of Northern Vietnam.
Must do:
-
A ride on a motorcycle or in a car on the Happiness Road (Hanh Phuc Road).
-
A boat cruise on the Nho Que river to admire the gorges from below.
