Whale Island (Hòn Ông) – a nature escape 110 km from Nha Trang
Table of contents
If you dream of a quiet place, far from the urban bustle, Whale Island is made for you.
Located in Vân Phong Bay, about 110 km from Nha Trang, it is also known by the name Hòn Ông.
This small island captivates with its untouched natural beauty: white sand, turquoise sea and coconut palms as far as the eye can see.
It is a true haven of peace, where nature is protected and the marine ecosystem preserved.

Why the name “Whale Island”?
In Vietnamese, “whale” (“cá ông”) is an honorific term for certain cetaceans, seen as the protectors of fishermen in the coastal regions of central Vietnam. According to local tradition, whales are said to have come to the rescue of fishermen in distress, and a cult grew up around this animal: hence the island’s name.

How to get to Hòn Ông?
-
The Đầm Môn pier is the departure point. From Nha Trang, allow about 2 hours by road + 20 minutes by boat.
-
On the island there is only one large hotel complex: Whale Island Resort.
-
Transfer from Nha Trang or Cam Ranh airport: free or a special rate possible depending on the accommodation.
Must-do activities
-
Diving / snorkeling: clear waters, coral reefs, schools of fish visible from the surface.
-
Kayaking around the island to discover the hidden coves.
-
A stroll through the coconut grove or a short hike in the island’s forest (allow about 2 h). You may spot protected bird species.
-
Lazing on the main beach, swimming in calm waters.
-
New activity: exploring the coral reef restoration sites, which lets you discover the local ecological commitment.
-
Sunset from a high point on the island — less crowded and perfect for a romantic or peaceful moment.
Practical tip: bring long-sleeved clothing and water for the hike, as well as your diving mask if you have one.
Best time to visit Hòn Ông
From February to August, the island enjoys a warm, dry climate and a calm sea — the ideal time to go. Outside this season, conditions can be less reliable.
