Electricity and Electrical Outlets in Vietnam
Table of contents
Electricity in Vietnam covers practically the entire country, including rural areas. However, local outages can still occur, especially in the countryside or during periods of high demand.

What is the voltage of the electrical current in Vietnam?
The standard voltage throughout Vietnam is 220 volts, frequency 50 Hz.
Some older buildings or isolated installations may still have 110 V outlets, but this is rare.
For a tourist coming from Europe (where the network is often at 220 V), a transformer is generally not necessary, provided your devices support this voltage (check the label “100-240V” or similar)
Types of Outlets / Electrical Plugs Used
Vietnam uses several types of outlets, which can vary depending on the region or building:
- Type A outlet: two flat prongs (very common in the South and modern hotels)
- Type C outlet: two round pins (often used in northern cities and older homes)
- Type F outlet (with ground) / E: sometimes present in modern buildings or high-end facilities
- Some sources indicate that Type B outlets or A/B combinations can also be found, particularly in the South or for imported appliances.

In summary: electrical outlets in Vietnam are often compatible with your European devices (Type C), but it is wise to bring a universal adapter to cover cases of Type A or F outlets.
Power Outages & Precautions
- Outages are more frequent in rural areas, in mountains, or during storms.
- During periods of high consumption (hot season, evening hours), some urban neighborhoods may experience scheduled outages.
- It is therefore advisable to plan ahead with a flashlight, an external battery / power bank for your essential devices (phone, camera).
- Some facilities (guesthouses, hotels) have small generators or emergency lighting systems to handle outages.
Recommendations for Travelers
- Check that your devices are “multi-voltage” (100-240 V): if so, you only need an adapter (not a transformer).
- Bring a universal adapter that covers types A, C, F to be sure to be compatible with all Vietnamese outlets.
- Avoid using high-power appliances (such as hair dryers or irons) on unstable outlets – use accommodation-provided equipment if possible.
- Be prepared in case of unexpected power failure: charge batteries, keep an emergency light on hand.
Have a great trip to Vietnam!
