Traditions, history and daily life of Vietnam

The traditions of Vietnam are deeply linked to family, respect for elders and the cult of ancestors. Traditional festivals, religious rituals and local cuisine are part of daily life and reflect a rich, millenary culture.

There is no single dominant religion in Vietnam. Many Vietnamese practice a combination of Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism, along with traditional ancestor worship. Catholicism is also present in several regions of the country.

The most important holiday is Tet, the Vietnamese lunar new year. Other popular celebrations include the Mid-Autumn Festival and numerous local festivals dedicated to the guardian spirits of the villages.

The most famous traditional dress is the ao dai, an elegant long dress worn especially during ceremonies, cultural events and holidays. It is considered a symbol of Vietnamese elegance and cultural identity.

The family has a central role in the society of Vietnam. Respect for parents and elders is very important, and many life decisions are made with the well-being of the family in mind.

Vietnam has numerous forms of traditional art such as water puppet theater, traditional music and local crafts. In Hoi An and Hue many of these artistic traditions can still be discovered.
